Feeling tired while you are driving? Fatigue may have negative impacts on your health and quality of life, but it may also have a costly effect on your immediate safety when you are on the road.

Whether it is staying up late on a Saturday night or chronic sleep issues that affect your quality of sleep, fatigue will affect your cognition and performance which may lead to motor vehicle accidents, accidents at the workplace, and other health issues.

Driver Inattention Crash Statistics and Drowsy Driving Prevention

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that more than one third of American adults are not getting enough sleep on a regular basis. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society recommend that adults aged 18-60 years old sleep at least seven hours each night. When adults sleep less than the recommended hours seven hours, there is an increased risk of developing health issues.

Many Americans will develop a sleep deficit over the course of the week. They intend to make up the sleep on the weekend, but that often is not practical or even possible. If a person needs seven hours of sleep a night, and each night during the work week they get six hours of sleep, they build up a sleep debt of five hours. This would require the difficult task of getting an extra two and a half hours of sleep on Saturday and Sunday each.

Why Does This Matter – Drowsy Driving Contribution to Car Accidents

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDoT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) report The Impact of Driver Inattention On Near-Crash/Crash Risk, drowsy driving – also known as sleep-deprived driving – may factor in about twenty percent of all serious motor vehicle injuries. The research further reports that drowsy drivers are between 4.5 and 8.5 times as likely to be involved in a motor vehicle crash.

Causes of Auto Accidents – Drowsy Driving Vs. Drunk Driving (DUI)

When you boil it down, the Sleep Foundation says, drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as drinking under the influence. Being awake for 18 hours straight will make you drive like you have a blood alcohol level (“BAC”) of .05. Staying awake for 24 straight hours will make you drive like you have a BAC of .10. To put these numbers into perspective, .08 is considered legally drunk.

Drowsiness Affects Your Ability to Drive

You never know who is out on the road. Drowsy driving makes it hard for the driver to pay attention to what’s on the road, and that is how accidents happen. You may be sitting at a red light, waiting to go to work when someone coming home from their night shift rear ends your vehicle. If you suspect a person is sleep deprived or even drinking while operating a vehicle, make sure you tell the responding police officer.

Drowsy Driving Accident Lawsuit – How Much Will I Be Compensated?

A wide variety of factors will influence how much compensation you will receive. Your car accident attorneys at The Kryder Law Group will argue you should receive compensation for pain and suffering, your medical bills and costs, and lost wages from time missed off work. Pain and suffering is harder to quantify than medical bills and lost wages because it involves a subjective component that will vary with each person.
