It is bordered by Chicago Heights, Matteson, Olympia Fields, Richton Park and University Park. Interstate Highway 57 is less than three miles to the west and the Calumet Expressway eight miles to the east, providing access to all of the major highways in the Chicago area. Both Midway and O’Hare airports are less than an hour away. Park Forest residents have easy access to three Metra commuter rail line stations. Metra trains make 80 daily trips to downtown Chicago. During rush hour, this trip can take as little as 50 minutes.
The village was originally designed as a planned community for veterans returning from World War II. Park Forest is also known for the “Scenic 10”, a 10-mile (16 km) race held annually on Labor Day that attracts runners from around the globe. In 2008, the race was shortened to a 5-mile (8.0 km) course to attract more local runners and renamed the “Scenic Five”. Park Forest has a long history of sustainable practices. In recent years however the Village of Park Forest has made a concerted effort to become the most sustainable community in Illinois.

The Village has a Paratransit Service Provider Agreement with PACE for a Dial-A-Ride bus service known as The Jolly Trolley. The Jolly Trolley provides a local bus option to Park Forest residents and is a Village-sponsored partnership with Rich Township. The Jolly Trolley will take any Park Forest resident to any location within Park Forest and to select destinations outside of Village boundaries.

Adults ride for $3. A transfer for an adult is 30 cents as long as the adult passenger boards the second bus within two hours of getting off of the first bus.
Seniors (65+), disabled persons, and students ride for $1.50. A transfer for seniors, disabled persons, and students is 15 cents, as long as these passengers board the second bus within two hours of getting off of the first bus.
