Getting to Know Berwyn: Facts and Local Guide

Like many parts of Illinois, current day Berwyn was Native American land. The area now known as Berwyn included parts of the Green Bay Trail and Ottawa Trail; both trails were used by the French, Native Americans and early traders in the region. The land that is now Berwyn was later deeded to Theodore Doty who began construction on an 8 foot wood plank trade road from Chicago to Ottawa. Later the road would be used for stage coach travel.

In 1890, two Chicago attorneys named Charles Piper and Wilbur Andrews purchased 106 acres of land in the area with the idea of developing a railroad station. In 1901 the two named the railroad stop Berwyn after a well-known Philadelphia suburb known for its beauty. Berwyn was officially formed in 1908 when it broke from Cicero Township.
