Trivia question: How did Dolton get its name?
Answer: The village of Dolton was named after George Dolton and his sons who first settled in the area.
Dolton was founded and incorporated by George Dolton in 1892, but this was long after he settled in the area. George Dolton arrived and settled the area in 1835, at the point where the Indian trail crosses the Little Calumet River. J.C Matthews arrived the next year, and together with Dolton, they operated a ferry along that route until a toll bridge was built. The village of Riverdale would later be separated from Dolton in 1892.
Dolton had children that later went on to settle in the area. Noteworthily, the village was named after the family.
In 1840, Dolton witnessed an influx of industries and industrial growth followed, following the construction of the toll bridge and railways.
Human skeletons have been found at the Anker Site of Dolton on the shores of this river. The bones date back to AD 1400. Natives Americans from various tribes had lived in that area around that time.
