The City of Chicago provides traffic crash data via the Chicago Data Portal. Citywide traffic data about car crashes is available from September 2017 and tracks crash reports on city streets within the city limits and under the Chicago Police Department (CPD) jurisdiction.
This data excludes personally identifiable information and is added to the data portal when the crash report is finalized in E-Crash, so you can even view information about Chicago crashes today. About 50% of the reports, which tend to be minor crashes, are self-reported and the other half are recorded by the responding police officer.
Data that is recorded includes the date and time of the crash, the type of accident, the severity of injuries, whether there were fatalities, the location of the incident, the posted speed limits at the crash location, whether there were traffic signals present, and more.

The data shows that for the year period from September 12, 2021 through September 12, 2022, there were 165 fatalities, 2,273 incapacitating injuries, and 108,112 accidents.
The most common types of accidents include collisions involving parked motor vehicles as well as rear-end accidents. When it could be determined, the top contributing cause to these accidents was failure to yield the right of way and following too closely.
