Elgin is the eighth largest city in Illinois. Located on the Fox River about 35 miles northwest of Chicago, the City of Elgin has worked hard to revitalize its downtown business district. In 2014, Elgin completed a multimillion dollar streetscape improvement project designed to revitalize its historic city and the promenade bordering the Fox River. Elgin is home to the award winning Borden Public Library. In addition, Elgin was one of the first cities to embrace riverboat casinos in Illinois. The Grand Victoria Casino opened in the 1990s and has contributed over 100 million dollars to the community. Elgin Fire Station 1 is located at 550 Summit Street, just west of Liberty Street (Route 25). Station 1 serves the northeast part of Elgin. Station 1 is the headquarters of the Elgin Fire Department. In addition to the on-duty crew available for emergency response, the station also contains the administrative offices of the Fire Chief, the Assistant Fire Chief’s as well as the Fire Prevention Bureau. Elgin Illinois has 133 firefighters on duty to protect the citizens of Elgin, Illinois. Fire fighters put their life on the line to prevent fires and protect the property of Elgin residents.
